The High Spirits Double Kestrel Flute in the key of "D" is made from birch, a hardwood. The flute is sealed with non-toxic oils that give it a beautiful finish and add to its clear, bright voice.
It is a 6-hole flute but we cover the 3rd hole down from the top of the flute (known as the 6th hole) with a removable leather tie to give you the option of playing it as a 6-hole flute (easier for beginners) or a 5-hole flute.
This is the highest octave we make in the key of "D" and it is a good accompaniment flute for flutes in the key of “D”.
Because of its range of notes this flute can also play a relative major diatonic scale in the key of "F”.
This flute is 15 inches long x 7 inches at its widest (38 cm long x 18 cm at its widest).
Double flutes are unique because they sound like two people are playing!
Contrary to what some people think these flutes are as easy to play as the single flutes. The main difference is that they take a little more breath because you are sounding two flutes at once.
High Spirits Double Flutes have two holes in the mouthpiece allowing you to instantly switch between playing them as a double flute (blow into both holes) or a single flute (blow into one hole) while you’re playing. Additionally, the drone side can switch between playing the low octave or the high octaves while you’re playing. For more playing tips see the Double and Triple section of our Center for Instruction.
Drone Holes Modification:
We offer the option of adding three fingering holes to the drone-side of the flute (the three low notes). We cover these holes with removable leather ties so you can change the drone note, adding another level of flexibility to this already diverse flute.
