The Woodpecker plays a major role in the legend of the Native Flute in the western United States. This flute has been the mascot for High Spirits Flutes since the very beginning when we originally first started making flutes in 1990; the Woodpecker was the first Bird Head Flute we created.
The flute's body is handcrafted from Ebonized Walnut and inlaid with Turquoise cabochons. The hand-sculpted bird head is treated with a transparent dye, enhancing the natural wood grain. They are an elegant functional art sculpture and the precision tuning ensures that each flute meets the needs of a professional musician or a fist time player.
Ebonizing is a process used in the early 1900s. Even though the ebony wood was already rare and costly, ebony furniture was popular at that time. To compensate for that, wood workers developed a dyeing process called ebonizing. Unlike a stain, the dyeing process penetrates the wood fiber deeply. Walnut is ideal for this process because it has a dark brown grain that streaks through the black dye giving it a similar look to ebony. We have found that this process can enhance the sound quality of the wood.
The High Spirits Signature Series Flutes utilize a unique airflow design that provides exceptional responsiveness and player control, superior amplification, and makes them ideal for a wide range of musical styles.
Being tuned in the key of "A" minor; it can also be played in the relative major diatonic scale in the key of "C". They are a good accompaniment flute for any High Spirits flute in the key of 'A' minor.
The flute is 24 7/8 inches (63 cm) long with a 1-inch (2.5 cm) bore diameter
