Our Kestrel Flute in the high tone key of 'D' minor is made from domestic Aromatic Cedar featuring Turquoise accent. Aromatic Cedar is a softwood that is prized for its tonal qualities, it provides the flute with a resonant and warm musical voice. We've named this flute after the American Kestrel (Falco sparverius) which is one of the smallest and most common falcon birds found in North America.

In general the key of 'D' is often recognized because it is the primary key of Penny Whistles, which adds to the versatility of the Kestrel 'D' for pairing with other instruments and musical styles. Our high-tone flutes are a great instrument for drum circles because their higher pitch allows them to beautifully stands out among lower-tone instruments.

This flute is tuned to the key of "D" minor, and it can also be played in the relative major diatonic scale in the key of "F".

The Kestrel 'D' is the highest octave flute that we make in the key of 'D' minor, which makes it a great accompaniment to any of our other bass tone flutes in the key of 'D' such as our Condor Bass 'D'.

The compact size of our Kestrel Flutes make them an ideal choice for those wanting to use their flutes for travel or outdoor activities such as hiking or backpacking.  The Kestrel 'D' is 15 inches (38 cm) in length.

This is a six hole flute. We automatically include a leather hole cover with this flute, which can be used on the third hole from the top of the flute, as seen in the product's images. Covering the third hole from the top makes the flute easier to learn to play. The leather hole cover can easily be untied and removed, giving the flute player the option of playing the instrument as either a five hole flute or a six hole flute.

Our Preservation Collection reflects our commitment to sustainability, respect for the Earth's natural resources, and the woodworking process. Preservation Collection flutes meet the exact same sound quality standards as all our other flutes at a deep discount!

Their difference is that they may have design differences, adaptations, unique woods, limited quantities on one-of-a-kind flutes, slight cosmetic imperfections, minor shaping inconsistencies, which do not detract from the flute's purpose in any way.

Each Preservation Collection flute remains a high-quality, American handcrafted, woodwind instrument. As with all of our flutes, we stand by our musical instrument quality reputation, and sound quality is always guaranteed.
